Dear C.J.,
I am a senior and I am having trouble choosing between WVU and Marshall. What should I do?
Lost in Logan
Dear Lost in Logan,
I would probably first ask you what area/major you were interested in. If both WVU and Marshall have these then I would then ask you to visit the campus with your parents and see if it appeals to you. If you are still unsure I would branch out either through myspace, facebook or just old fashioned email and ask students that you know how they like attending school there. But please Do Not let your friends be the factor in choosing which school you should attend, because chances are they may not be your friend in a year or by the time you graduate. Please let me know which way you decide and keep both options open!
Thanks for writing,
C.J.

Barbie: Bad influence??
The latest uproar in West Virginia has been the “Barbie” controversy. According to Jeff Eldredge, who started the debate, Barbie is a bad influence on young girls. He argues that while Barbie is a toy, it is a very influential tool when it comes to young girls’ self-esteem. The “perfection” of Barbie is said to reflect what young girls now believe they should be. Having everything, even down to the perfect body, is an issue that is now burned into the brain of every girl. Even through the teenage years, girls are constantly trying to fit into the stereotype that society has created for them. While it is true that these stereotypes are a bit ridiculous, I do not believe that a mere toy could cause such a drastic change in young girls. Mostly because, at such a young age, children don’t care about anything but Disney princesses and playing dress up. Barbie is just another toy, and it should not be banned.
Now, my question for you is whether or not you agree with Eldredge in his idea to ban Barbie in West Virginia. Why or why not?
